Dallas is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
Oh, wait. I DO live here. Well, shit.
That said, it’s been a little over 4 years and duty calls me back to San Antonio. As of the end of September, I will once again be a resident of the Alamo City. I look forward to seeing how SA has changed, as well as exploring new opportunities (to get naked) and getting to spend more time with my core group of friends.
Truth be told, I can’t say that I’ll miss Dallas all that much. Having grown up in Chicago, I figured Dallas would just be a smaller version and that I’d find my place, a crew of friends and easy normalcy. That hasn’t been the case. It’s been a little disappointing.
What I can say is that the things one hears about Dallas when living in other parts of Texas appear to be spot-on: It’s glitzy, glossy, garish and money-obsessed. It appreciates status foremost and it’s got a trademark on what I call ‘insincere sincerity.’ Dallas in many ways strikes me as very un-Texan. From what I’ve seen, it shares a lot more in common with a place like Los Angeles. All sizzle, no steak.
Overall, I just got to a point where my primary enjoyment of Dallas came from being near DFW and AA’s massive hub of international flights. That’s not a great sign.
San Antonio will likely last less than a year, but it’s nice to get back to a place I’m inherently familiar with. It’ll also be comfortable being back in a city with a strong minority voice, a better mix of cultures within the gay community and a city council & mayor who value historical significance and finding that delicate balance between progress and the past.
… I also miss HEB. Desperately.
As per usual, I’ll continue to post regularly here on 15MM. The location changes, but the narrative remains the same. You can be sure I’ll have a ton more posts here about the guys I’m fucking- and getting fucked by- random observations and the state of travel as I see it. I’m always thankful for your readership and for the support I’ve received over the years in keeping this shitshow going. It’s been a LOT of fun. It’s also kept me a sharp writer, which is a skill I never want to lose.
Well, that and being able to shoot a load five feet across someone’s body. #OrgasmGoals
